Lecture at Brown University Rhode Island: Electronic Nose. Digitizations of Scent
On February 28, 2026, Prof. Jens Schröter delivered a lecture at the renowned Brown University. Via Zomm he took part in the conference The Odorous Object: On the Materiality of Scent in Providence.
The conference explored diverse perspectives on olfactory objects as material carriers of scent with cultural, social, and historical significance. Drawing on approaches from sensory and cultural studies, participants from nine countries presented their latest research findings. Particular attention was paid to the interconnections between the olfactory sense and colonial, ecological, and gender-related issues.
Prof. Jens Schröter contributed a distinctive perspective with his presentation on sensor–AI couplings. In his talk, he adressed the concept of the “electronic nose” and discussed its potential to technically simulate human-like perceptual processes.
